1972 Dave Emde – Son of a winner

At last year’s Daytona 200, Don Emde finished third. But this year’s 200 was all Don’s. And Yamaha’s. Don and his “Yami” charged around the world famous course at a 103.358 average to become the second Emde to win the 200. (Don’s dad won the Classic back in 1948.) And right behind Don were Yamaha-mounted Ray Hempstead and Dave Smith, making Yamaha’s first Daytona victory a decisive 1-2-3 sweep. Dave Smith also rode a Yamaha to victory in the 100-mile 250cc Combined Race, followed by Yami-riding Kenny Roberts. And Ronnie Dottley captured the Junior Race on yet another Yamaha. In Moto-Cross, the 250cc event went to Jimmy Weinert’s Yamaha, while the Open Class fell to Mark Blackwell’s Husqvarna. In Victory Lane, all of these riders answered one question the same. “What brand of spark plugs did you use?” “Champion!”

20 million people have switched to Champion Spark Plugs.

Winding up completely clutchless and practically brakeless, Dick Dorresteyn rode a brilliantly-paced race to win his second national Tourist Trophy championship, the Ascot 50-lapper promoted by J.C. Agajanian and televised nationally by ABC’s “Wide World of Sports.”

– No. 94r, Clyde Litch leads No. 94x, Jeff (Mickey Mouse) Sperry through tigh turn in amateur event. Litch won – his second national victory in two weekends.

– And this is how they finished; Dorresteyn, Van Leeuwen and Payne round the hairpin and approach the jump.

– Jack Simmons unloaded in first turn, continued to finish 10th.

– Near-Winner White and 6th place Kretz sail their Triumphs over the jump in unison.

– ABC’s TV camera swings around on its boom to catch start of the 50-lapper. White, no. 77, did a wheelie almost to the turn.

1965 Roger Reiman Wins 3rd Big One at Daytona International Speedway

With the wind and rain in his face the entire distance, Grand National Champion Roger Reiman of Kewanee, Ill., raced his Harley-Davidson to his third win in the Daytona 200 over the rain splattered 3.81 mile road course at the Daytona International Speedway…

photos: top left: The big start – in the rain – as almost 100 riders blast off toward the Daytona International Speedway high banked turn. In spite of uninterrupted rain throughout the 200 mile race, speed averages were only slightly below those of last year’s meet. Note water spray from tires.

1953 National Hare & Hound across the Mojave desert to Lucerne, Calif.

Cover: With the expression of “Brother, how tough can they make it?” on their faces, eager “hounds” scamper on across the Mojave desert to the finish at Lucerne, Calif. This year’s National Hare and Hound, promoted by the Rams M/C (Motorcycle Club) of Los Angeles, spelled out rugged with a capital “R”, unrolling one hundred and forty miles of choppy, sandy terrain without letup. Out of 400 starters, 103 tired but determined hot-shoes checked in at the finish. With a quote from one of the winners: “I’d like to lay one out just like it and chase every member of the Rams Club over it,” we leave it to your imagination.

Contents: Thirty seconds to live; Action in Ardsley Woods; Cycle Fantasia; I fell for Hollywood; Rams go Wild; Freshman on a Flash; All in the brakes; Echo from Tokio; Built like a bridge; Twenty years with NSU; fiction or fact?; Redwood Reliability Run; Saint Vincent and the Mountain; more
