1951 Belmont Stadium – World’s fastest 1/4 Mile Dirt Track opens ’51 season

Filed under: Other Vintage Motorcycle Articles — Tags: , , — dadsvintageads @ 10:59 am

An enthusiastic crowd of over 5000 fans turned out to cheer and thrill at the first race of the season in Belmont Stadium, 20 miles south of San Francisco…

Photos:

Joe Leonard No. 98, a young newcomer, almost outrode Kenny Eggers and Larry Geadrick, national champs, and did it with ease.

Start of the Trophy Dash. Charlie West, one of the really hot boys at this track, gets out right now at the flash of the signal lights.

John Cross of Vallejo is cruising along blissfully unaware that the rider who is down is about to dump him too. The man down is also unaware that he is about to tangle with Cross’ rear wheel. Just a close squeek that was caught by the speedlights.

Vintage Motorcycle Racing article has a drawing of the Road Course at Camp Callan near Del Mar, Calif. off of highway 101. Shaded blocks are danger areas.

“The following was received by us from Al Papp of Hollywood. It expresses his opinion on the future of paved road racing in the United Stages. He also gives his ideas on how he thinks the sport can be improved as he outlines certain factors from a spectator’s standpoint. Mr. Papp conducted a series of Class “A” Short-track races before and after the war. He also put on one of America’s first all-paved road races at Santa Ana, as well as arranged for and conducted the motorcycle races held in conjunction with the Sport Car races at Camp Callan, Del Mar, California…”
