1951 Triumph Thunderbird Wins Catalina Grand National

Walt Fulton, popular Texas rider cheered by 7500 for spectacular victory.

For many years, California motorcyclists have looked forward to staging a race that would be comparable to the “Isle of Man.” World-famous Catalina Island ofered an ideal location for such an event and through the cooperation of Mr. P.K. Wrigley, owner of the Island, the race became an actuality. The 10-mile course which starts at the water’s edge, rises to the summit of the island, some 1800 feet above sea level. Sharp turns, steep grades, and decomposed granite make it an exacting test for both men and machines.

Start: 132 riders were started in groups of five, at 30-second intervals. Walt Fulton, who started in 103rd position, passed 51 competitors in the first lap, moved into 10th position in the fifth lap, and then to 1st in the 9th lap.

Left – Narrow hilly path and loose dirt is typical of the natural hazards. Course led to summit of the mountains in the background. The other three pictures show Walt Fulton at various stages of the race. Notice his exceptionally fine riding form. Motor tuned by popular George Butler, owner of the Valley Cycle Center, San Bernardino, Calif.
