1974 Rebuilding the World’s First Motorcycle

…one man in Massachusetts wants to share these feelings with Gottlieb Daimler, builder of the world’s first known internal-combustion-powered motorcycle. Ken Williams is a sheet metal worker by trade, and an avid antique collector who has restored several antique bikes. While searching for some information on a Ner-A-Car that he was restoring, he came across the story of Daimler’s first motorcycle. It gnawed away at his insides until he knew that he had to build a replica…

1963 German Two-Wheel Museum – Deutsches Zweirad Museum, Neckarsulm, Germany

Numerous exhibits including, push bikes, high-wheelers, historic motorcycles and racing machines

Antique & classic two-wheelers shown in this article are:

-A dainty, Anzani-powered 2.4 liter (146.5 cubic inches) belt drive special used immediately after WWI to tow a bicyclist up to world-record speeds.

-Sample of the Zweirad Museum wall cartoons, depicting an early race.

-Displays like the Baum “flying lawnchair” are frequently loaned to motorcycle shows (here Frankfurt) so you never know what the three-story museum may hold on a given day.

-The date is obvious (1902), but their first Neckarsulm powered bicycle couldn’t be called a “motorrad,” or motorcycle, in Germany because that name had been patented.

-Before Gottlieb Daimler built an automobile he put the motor in this two-wheeler, in 1885. The original was destroyed; this is a copy.

-One regular there is the Megola built in the Twenties in Munich. The five-cylinder rotary motor drove the front wheel via a planetary drive.

-This 1820 Munich push bike required one man-power to get you around town before the days of motors.
